In 2024, The Australian Commonwealth Government announced that all eligible customers will receive up to $300 to help with their electricity bills in the 2024–25 financial year, paid in quarterly installments. The relief fund extension is for households and eligible small businesses with electricity bills. Energy bill rebates of up to $150 will be paid from 1 July 2025 to the end of 2025 in two installments.
Government Energy Bill Relief NSW
Times are a bit tough for many homeowners and small business customers in NSW, but there has been some good news on the energy bill front. The Australian Government has announced a $1.8 billion extension of the National Energy Bill Relief Fund by six months in the 2025–26 Budget.

What is the Energy Bill Relief Fund?
Accessing the Energy Bill Relief Fund
Eligible New South Wales residential customers and business customers generally receive the energy bill relief payments automatically from their electricity provider (retailer) into their electricity account. If you are eligible and have not received the bill relief payments, contact your electricity provider directly.

Household bill relief payments
The energy bill relief rebate can be accessed by eligible households in NSW, including concession card holders, that satisfy eligibility requirements as follows:
- Hold an active electricity account with an energy retailer for their place of residence.
- Use their electricity account for domestic purposes only.
The energy bill relief extension rebates will be applied from the below dates.
- 1 July 2025
- 1 October 2025
Payments for households in embedded networks
If your household is in an embedded network such as a caravan park, retirement village, or apartment building, you may need to apply for the Bill Relief payment. If you live in an embedded network and are eligible for one of the NSW electricity rebates listed below for the 2024 – 25 financial years, you will be automatically assessed for and receive the Bill Relief payment.
- Low Income Household Rebate
- Family Energy Rebate
- Medical Energy Rebate
- Life Support Rebate
If your household is in an embedded network and is eligible for the Seniors Energy Rebate, you will need to apply for the Bill Relief Payment.

Small business bill relief payments
To be eligible for rebates, small businesses must meet the NSW Government definition of an electricity small business customer as determined by their annual electricity consumption threshold. Small businesses whose annual electricity consumption is above the threshold set by the NSW Government will not be eligible for bill relief. Most eligible small businesses will receive their energy rebate automatically from their electricity provider. To qualify for the energy bill relief rebate, small businesses must have:
- an active ABN listed on the Australian Business Register.
- a separately metered business tariff.
- Annual electricity consumption below the 100 MWh threshold.
Payments for small businesses in embedded networks
Small businesses in embedded networks such as shopping centres that meet the NSW definition of an electricity small customer determined by their annual electricity consumption may be eligible for a rebate. Some small businesses in embedded networks will be able to receive their Bill Relief payment directly into their energy account from their electricity retailer.
