Top tips to reduce your energy consumption when working from home

The world we live in today is frightening. For many Australian’s our lives have been turned upside down. The Coronavirus which struck the nation early this year has pushed us all to change the way we live, with little insight into when this might all be over.

As a result, we’ve had to make changes to the way we live. For those lucky enough to still be in work, you may now be facing different work conditions, such as working from home. For those less fortunate who have sadly lost their jobs, been stood down, or had reduced hours, you will likely be also at home, but with the added pressure of mounting household costs to maintain.

In both situations, keeping a close watch on your electricity and gas bills is essential in ensuring you alleviate as much of the stress this pandemic brings with it, therefore whether you’re worried about the rising cost of your bills due to higher usage from working from home, or you’re concerned about how you’re going to pay your energy bills, we’ve put together our top tips on how to reduce your energy bills during this trying time.

Tip #1 – Computer usage

For many, we’ve set up a home office for not just ourselves, but possibly also our children as we work from home and school from home. Therefore ensure that you:

  • Turn computers off at night time
  • Set computers to snooze after 10 minutes of inactivity
  • Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth if you’re not using it (this saves loads)
  • Laptops are more energy efficient than desktops, so if you can, use these.
  • Try and avoid using multiple monitors where possible.
  • Unplug unnecessary usb connections e.g. printers, scanners, speakers, flash drives.

Tip #2 – Go Paperless

This is a great habit to get in. Here are a couple of ways of doing so:

  • Start with not even plugging in a printer. Just removing the option of being able to print and the added hassle of having to plug in and set up a printer could be enough to choose not to print. Not printing out page after page is a huge saving, plus you’ll have a clutter-free workspace.
  • If you need to print out documents for signing, encourage your organisation and others to use electronic signing applications such as Docusign or Hellosign. They’re not too expensive and so much more convenient.

Tip #3 – Reducing your heating and cooling

Your heating and cooling can be the single biggest element in high energy bills. In fact, around 40% of home energy usage goes on heating and cooling, so where you can avoid using heating and cooling, we suggest you try. Here are some handy ideas:

  • If you’re working from home you’re probably not in a suit and tie or other uncomfortable clothing. Put a blanket or doona over your legs and a nice warm jumper instead of cranking up the heater.
  • If you need to use your heating or cooling, set it to an appropriate temperature. For example, setting your heating to 20 degrees instead of 27 degrees could save you up to 10% off your heating costs.
  • Close doors to rooms that aren’t in use.
  • If multiple people are working or schooling from home, try and set up a workspace where you only require one space to be heated or cooled.
